Characters fade in and out of the story without much explanation, and you only get a chance to get to know a handful of them. Despite the hardness of the life on the streets, Mellow Yellow's happiness make it light-hearted and fun. Each chapter is only a few pages long and the font is fairly large and bold, making it manageable for new or reluctant readers. Mellow Yellow is a very simple but enjoyable book.
